About Chuppot
Chuppot is part of Hashgacha Pratit, which challenges the monopoly of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel through the provision of private religious services, believing that freedom of choice is a necessary element for maintaining a thriving Israeli Jewish identity, and that establishing freedom of marriage in the State of Israel – where every citizen can choose whom and how to marry – is a necessary step in fostering mutual respect between the different communities in this country.
Chuppot improves religious services in Israel by creating choices and promoting public discourse on the issue, and is the religious voice for religious freedom in Israel. It is led by social activists, rabbis and Halacha women who are pained by the situation in which religious coercion and religious extremism lead to alienation from Torah and tradition.
The organization conducts wedding ceremonies, providing services to an ever growing number of couples who are forced to marry without the authorization of the Chief Rabbinate – or choose to do so in an orderly, respectful and responsible manner. It promotes Judaism by choice, and strives to allow every couple to express their wishes in the design of the canopy ceremony within the framework of Halacha.
